about

Originally released in 1998 ERD.00:14421-023Z (‘ERD’) is the only official full length album from Chicago experimental project rehab. — Brian Kelly (Supplement), Bob Davies (pal:ndrøm), and Jon Taccona (Danger Guy). ERD captured the essence of rehab.’s session-based artistic process and transformative live performance. Supporting musicians included Nudge, Pulseprogramming, Jake Mandell and Skycraft. Thoroughly experimental in nature, ERD references a slew of musical genres especially noise, drone, ambient, dub and breakcore.

“...In the Chicago tradition of progressive sound exploration and experimental music, rehab. draws influences from Oval, Microstoria, E.A.R., and free jazz. rehab. samples from its immediate environment: video tapes, Sun Ra records, TV signals, band rehearsal tapes, etc. — and augments these collages with layers of analog noise resulting in sounds upon sounds. The end result is a surprisingly musical album which functions as a whole concept. The rehabilitation of sound into music…” -Ray Rodriguez, The Quaker Goes Deaf record store.

Having contributed the song Gentle Ben to Portland’s Outward Music Company debut compilation ōmco as well as gaining Midwest and Northwest exposure at raves, shows and art galleries, rehab. caught the attention of Endpoint Recordings label founder and Dust Traxx partner Adam Dorfman. In 1998 Dorfman released ERD as END 02 CD and END 02 LP on compact disc and double pack vinyl respectively. The release garnered critical acclaim via zine and record store reviews:

“This double vinyl contains nothing but beat-free otherworldly textures. Picture dropping the needle on this record and then experiencing alien landscapes previously known only to the crew of the USS Enterprise… … the tracks on this album don’t go anywhere near the dance floor — even Orb fans may find themselves surprised at the lack of traditional rhythms. But the demonic textures give a different type of energy that can be just as exciting... ...just as each track brought you face to face with the beast responsible for the twisted atmospherics you’re listening to, the little man who was leading you gets bored and pushes a button that makes you fall through the ground back into reality... ...the journey is definitely worthwhile, and this album is worth checking out if you’re not the type who needs the constant stimulus of a distorted 909 at 179 bpm to keep from dozing off.” -Massive magazine (Fall ’99).

Although the material was realized 23 years ago, the album still stands as a stunning snapshot of the shifting musical landscape of 90s experimental underground music and the cross pollination of the indy, spacerock, rave, and electronica scenes of that era.

The CD’s original 13 tracks (12 listed and one ‘hidden’) were lovingly extracted and expertly remastered by Timothy Stollenwork who tamed some of the harsher frequencies of the original recordings and made an even more immersive and cohesive album.
